Is Getting My Partner's Sperm Tested Important?

A commonly asked question is does my husband or partner need sperm testing?

When we look at couples who need help to conceive, we find that 40% have male factor, 40% have female factor and there is a 20% chance both have issues preventing them from conceiving. So, evaluating the male simultaneously, as early as possible, is one of the most practical ways of helping a couple.

Male evaluation is done by evaluating multiple parameters of his semen, ie. volume concentration, the amount of sperms in each mL, motility, and morphology. It is a very simple test. You get excellent information which helps guide the couple. I encourage every couple to do sperm testing after their first visit or even prior to seeing me. It also helps to plan for the care of the couple. If the male has a low sperm count, then you can customize treatment for the female in the form of not doing a hysterosalpingogram, which is expensive and painful. This couple will need more advanced treatment and checking the tubes with low sperm count does not help the couple. Men having less than 5 million total motile sperm will benefit with IVF and Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). This procedure facilitates sperm meeting the egg in the lab.
